Catherine of Siena

 Catherine of Siena, Mystic and Prophetic Witness, 1380

Today the Church remembers Catherine of Siena. Catherine is known as a mystic, a contemplative who devoted herself to prayer, as a humanitarian, a nurse who undertook to alleviate the suffering of the poor and the sick; as an activist, a renewer of Church and society, who took a strong stand on the issues affecting society in her day, and who never hesitated (in the old Quaker phrase) "to speak truth to power"; as an adviser and counselor, with a wide range of interests, who always made time for troubled and uncertain persons who told her their problems -- large and trivial, religious and secular.

Evening Prayer Tonight

One of the most famous collects (or short prayers) introduced by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer in the first Book of Common Prayer and is still use in our current Book of Common Prayer (Proper 28) is the following.

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Zita of Tuscany

Zita of Tuscany is remembered today on the Church’s calendar of Lesser Feasts.
 
The Collect:
 
Merciful God, who has given to us all things necessary for life and godliness; Grant that we, like your servant Zita, may be faithful in the exercise of our duties and that, whatever you give us to do, we may do it heartily to you for the honor and glory of your Name; through him who has called us to virtue, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Zita (c. 1212 – 27 April 1272) is an Italian saint, the patron saint of maids and domestic servants. She is often appealed to in order to help find lost keys.
 
Zita was born in Tuscany in the village of Monsagrati, not far from Lucca where, at the age of 12, she became a servant in the Fatinelli household. For a long time, she was unjustly despised, overburdened, reviled, and often beaten by her employers and fellow servants for her hard work and obvious goodness. The incessant ill-usage, however, was powerless to deprive her of her inward peace, her love of those who wronged her, and her respect for her employers. By this meek and humble self-restraint, Zita at last succeeded in overcoming the malice of her fellow-servants and her employers, so much so that she was placed in charge of all the affairs of the house. Her faith had enabled her to persevere against their abuse, and her constant piety gradually moved the family to a religious awakening.
 
Zita often said to others that devotion is false if slothful. She considered her work as an employment assigned to her by God, and as part of her penance, and obeyed her master and mistress in all things as being placed over her by God. She always rose several hours before the rest of the family and employed in prayer a considerable part of the time which others gave to sleep.
 
One anecdote relates a story of Zita giving her own food or that of her master to the poor. On one morning, Zita left her chore of baking bread to tend to someone in need. Some of the other servants made sure the Fatinelli family was aware of what happened; when they went to investigate, they claimed to have found angels in the Fatinelli kitchen, baking the bread for her.
 
According to another story, a housemaid who worked with her, maybe jealous of the affection Zita received from everybody, told their master that Zita used to steal from the Fatinellis what she gave to the poor. One day her master met Zita while she was going to see a needy family, with her apron full of things for them. He asked Zita what she was carrying and she answered that she was carrying only flowers and fronds. When she loosened her apron, flowers fell at her feet.

Today is the feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist. What follows is the collect of the day, and links to a short video from the Bible Project (a wonderful online resource – we use their videos for our Zoom Bible Project class on Wednesday nights). The video will give you a quick overview of how Mark’s Gospel shares the Good News of Jesus. We also pray this day for the clergy and people of Saint Mark’s churches around the world, and especially for the clergy and people of our Diocesan Cathedral Church, Saint Marks in Shreveport.

Strengthen and protect, O God, all those who suffer for their fidelity to Jesus Christ; that, like your servant Toyohiko Kawaga, they might persevere in seeking and serving Christ in all persons, and work tirelessly for the advancement of your kingdom; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honor and glory now and for ever. Amen.
 
“Toyohiko Kagawa was born in 1888 in Kobe, Japan. Orphaned early, he lived first with his widowed stepmother and then with an uncle. He enrolled in a Bible class in order to learn English, and in his teens he became a Christian and was disowned by his family. In his late teens, he attended Presbyterian College in Tokyo for three years.

Kateri Tekakwitha (pronounced [ˈɡaderi deɡaˈɡwita] in Mohawk), given the name - It translates to "She who bumps into things." Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks (1656 – April 17, 1680), was an Algonquin–Mohawk laywoman.

O God of justice and mercy, we remember before you your servants Peter Williams Cassey and Anna Besant Cassey, who, in the face of slavery and discrimination, gave the blessings of education and spiritual haven to the marginalized; Grant us to be fearless in the face of injustice and to work for blessings that will touch those whom the world does not count of value; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
 
Peter Williams Cassey was the first African-American ordained in the Episcopal Church in the West. He was born in Philadelphia of noted abolitionist and Episcopal clergy ancestors, and moved to California in 1856. He and his wife Annie helped found Trinity Church in San Jose and then St. Philips Mission and Academy. Peter was ordained a deacon in 1866 and then founded Christ Church (later St. Cyprian's) in San Francisco.

Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

 We hope you will join us for The Good Friday Liturgy at St. Patrick’s at Noon, at St. Alban’s or St. Thomas’ at 6:00 p.m. followed by The Way of the Cross. All of these liturgies will be streamed live on Facebook at each of the church’s Facebook pages as well.

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We hope you will join us for Evening Prayer tonight at St. Alban’s or St. Thomas’ at 6:00 p.m. for Maundy Thursday. The Eucharist will be followed by stripping the altar for Good Friday and then by the Way of Cross. The liturgy will be streamed live on Facebook as well.
